While cleaning out and packing up our stuff in Brownsville, we decided the kids were ready to upsize their bikes, so we opted for leaving the old ones behind and to get new ones when we got to So Cal. Hunter's went to Grandma's so he would have one there, but since Audrey already had one at Grandma's, she donated hers to the Brownsville Bike Rodeo so another little girl can enjoy it! For some reason I haven't figured out, they had in their minds that they wanted mountain bikes, although Audrey was a little hesitant and asked me if it was okay to ride a mountain bike in the city, you know "since there are no mountains!" That girl, she is just like her mother sometimes!
When we got to our new house, Wes and I agreed that the bikes were a privilege meant to be earned. So our goal was for good attitudes, good school work and clean (ish) rooms, as well as helping out around the house. This meant that the kids had to be EXTRAORDINARY, not just good, not just great!
As you can see, each day wasn't deserving of a big ole smile, but with only one frown, I think we have success! So the day came when we went out for a secret family night. We had the kids convinced it was Tuesday so they wouldn't have any clues. We took them to dinner, burgers and shakes on the Huntington Pier, then told them we had to stop in to Toys-r-Us for plastic pools for Wes to use at work. This didn't sound weird because we had just done this 2 weeks ago. I faked needing to go to the back to go to the bathroom and when we got to the bikes, we let them in on our secret! Audrey's squeal was priceless!
We took them for a spin around Huntington Park, they go really fast, and yes, they work great even though there are no mountains!
